The Great Debate: Herbal Medicine Healing and Cancer

Chinese herbal cancer medicine has been debated by researchers as having a cure for the disease. Herbal medicine as a whole has long been disregarded in the West as a viable means of helping individuals to recover from various illnesses. Today, it is being recognized as a valuable tool to be used alongside of conventional medicine, especially in extreme cases such as cancer. Although herbal medicine does not supply healing for cancer, it does help the patient alongside of conventional medicine to give that person a better quality of life and a relief from some of the side effects of the chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Although there are some that would claim that herbal medicine provides healing from cancer, most herbologists do not dare to claim such a thing as there is no research to prove it. There is research, however, that shows that some herbal medicines do stop the growth of cancer cells in a lab setting. This has led some to believe that herbal medicine might someday heal cancer in some patients, but that is not the case today.

When a person comes to a Chinese practitioner for healing of cancer side effects by means of herbal medicine, the practitioner will first do an examination of the person to see what the imbalances are in the person's body. The practitioner will look at the person's skin, hair, eyes and tongue to see if there are any irregularities there. He will also listen to the voice and the body sounds to see if there are abnormalities there. In addition, he will feel the person's pulse to see if there are any irregularities in the strength or rhythm of it.

Once the diagnosis has been made, the individual will be put on an herbal medicine program for healing cancer's side effects and restore balance to the body. Often the treatment will include both an herbal treatment in addition to acupuncture techniques to stimulate some of the blocked areas that are out of balance. The herbal treatments will be made up of a combination of four to twelve different herbs that are designed to help with that patient's needs. The herbs are sometimes boiled in water to make a tea to drink each day, or they can also be mixed into a powder or pill form for easier consumption. These herbs are designed to bring the body back into harmony so that the electrical pathways and patterns are restored, making the immune system stronger and the person more able to fight the cancer.
